Prada Luna Rossa
Lift the bottle to smell it, and watch the fragrance come apart: the gesture, tracked from the base to the nose, drives a 3D animation on a glasses-free display.
The context
Built right after Prada X Prada, in virtual reality, this project took the opposite path: no headset, a kiosk installed in store that any customer could use without explanation. The principle started from a gesture everyone makes in front of a fragrance: lifting the bottle and bringing it to the nose.
My role
I handled the technical direction and installation of the kiosk deployed in store: choice of setup, integration of the autostereoscopic display, the Kinect and the RFID chips, and on-site set-up.
What it changed
The kiosk turned fragrance discovery into a visual experience without asking anything of the customer: lifting the bottle triggered the animation, and the distance to the nose set its progress. The composition of the fragrance became visible at the very moment it was smelled.
What was delivered
An interactive in-store kiosk: an autostereoscopic display for glasses-free 3D, a bottle fitted with an RFID chip, and gesture tracking with a Kinect. The movement from the base to the nose, treated as an arc split into steps, drove the animation of the bottle breaking apart and its notes appearing. The rendering of 3D materials, very demanding, had to stay smooth on this kind of display.
What remains
The best trigger for an experience is the gesture the customer would make anyway. Nobody had to learn anything: everyone lifts a bottle to smell it. In store, the most successful technology is the one nobody notices.
